When the body digests food and subsequently transports and stores nutrients, it results in diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT). The process, which is a measure of how well the metabolism functions, changes in light of mealtime.
“Our results show that a meal eaten for breakfast, regardless of the amount of calories it contains, creates twice as high diet-induced thermogenesis as the same meal consumed for dinner,” said the study’s corresponding author, Juliane Richter, M.Sc., Ph.D., of University of Lübeck in Germany. “This finding is significant for all people as it underlines the value of eating enough at breakfast.”
Higher DIT In The Morning
Researchers worked with 16 male participants who first ate low-calorie breakfast meals and high-calorie dinners, then did the opposite during the second round of the study. They discovered that identical caloric consumption resulted in 2.5 times higher DIT in the morning over evening meals. The study authors also found that not eating enough breakfast increased participant appetites, especially for sugary foods.
“We recommend that patients with obesity as well as healthy people eat a large breakfast rather than a large dinner to reduce body weight and prevent metabolic diseases,” Richter said.
