With the current state of our society, it is more important than ever to monitor your mental, physical and emotional health. Self-quarantining, while beneficial, can take a toll on our life satisfaction and begin to impact how we feel and our overall well-being.

There are steps you can take that can boost not only your mood, but your immunity as well. According to a University of Kansas study, even smiling can bring about more positive feelings within your body. Studies have also shown that staying positive is linked to a 73 percent lowered risk of heart failure, and that just thinking positively can lead to a 50 percent reduction of depressive symptoms. Regardless of the physical health benefits, taking your daily dose of positivity can be the best way to cultivate your mental health.

How to stay positive during self-quarantine

But how do we add moments of positivity into our life when we are stuck at home?

It’s actually easier to break up your routine and look for ways to de-stress when activities are practiced on your own. That being said, you can also incorporate outside connections through virtual platforms. There are even many ways you can practice positive thinking while practicing social distancing.

Give selflessly

Did you know that making other people happy can make you happy? Taking the time to think of others not only benefits the recipient, but it also shifts your perspective. Donate health supplies, cleaning products or funds to a medical organization that needs these things.

Choose a personal mantra

One of the easiest ways to shift your brain into a positive mindset is to speak truths to yourself. Pick a personal mantra or affirmation to help you through these difficult times.

Find time for meditative moments

Meditation can be intimidating for people who are unfamiliar with the practice, but it’s actually very simple. Start by taking five minutes to sit in silence and focus only on your breathing.

Surround yourself with positive people (virtually)

Your closest friends will have a huge impact on your mindset. Call or video chat with them during your downtime to quickly connect with others and boost your mood. With extra time on your hands, connect with those you rarely see or haven’t seen in a while.

How to add positivity to your daily routine

Every day is an opportunity to reset and perfect your daily routine, in order to encourage positive thinking. Life will throw stressors at you, but for your health, it is still important to prioritize staying positive.

In the morning

The best way to start your day off right is by adding some positivity to your morning routine. If you have little ones who are currently being homeschooled, wake up before them and pour yourself a cup of coffee before you serve anyone else. At this time, connect with yourself. Incorporate some quiet time by listening to guided meditations through apps like Headspace and Calm.

During lunch

Lunch can be a great way to take a pause from a hectic workday and reconnect with yourself. Since many of us are working from home, step away from your home office or workspace and rejuvenate. Liven up your day with some upbeat music that’ll put a smile on your face.

In the afternoon

Take a short break to allow yourself to get creative or enjoy a hobby you love, whether that’s reading creative or motivational articles online, going for a walk outside or grabbing a virtual coffee with a friend.

In the evening

Get those endorphins going by trying a virtual exercise class, or put on some fun music and dance while you cook dinner. You’ll be surprised by how good you feel, and by the benefits this can have on your work-life balance.

At night

Dedicate some time every evening to connecting with someone you love. Video-call friends or family to make sure you are able to reflect and converse with another person. If you’re not able to, an alternative is writing in a gratitude journal, as getting thoughts and feelings out is a great way to reflect and appreciate all the things you have. This activity is the best way to recharge and prepare for the next day.

Start small, but challenge yourself

Challenge yourself to make time for activities that bring positivity into your life. These moments are vital for not only your mental health, but for your overall well-being. Start small by adjusting your stay-at-home routine, even if that just means dressing up, investing in a hobby or scheduling a call with a loved one.
