Do you wish you could become a morning person? Do you dread hearing your morning alarm? Do you dream of all of the things you could accomplish at home if you could stop smashing the snooze button? Do you feel like you don’t even start to wake up until lunchtime?

The good news is that even if you aren’t naturally a morning person, there are some simple ways to become one.

How to Become a Morning Person

You may never love the mornings. But it is possible to become more of a morning person by starting better sleep hygiene habits. Here’s what experts recommend:

  1. Set your bedtime to line up with your rising time. Most people need 7 to 9 hours of sleep. If you have to wake up at 6 a.m., that means you should be in bed and sleeping between 9 and 11 p.m. the night before. If you typically go to sleep much later, start pushing your bedtime back in 15 minute increments until you’re closer to your target bedtime.
  2. Get into a routine of winding down in the hour before bed. Try to replace blue light from your phone, computer, or TV with something more relaxing, like a book, a bath, or a podcast.
  3. Our body responds to natural sunlight as a way to know that it’s time to wake up for the day. If you can get in front of an open window first thing in the morning, the sunlight will help your body start the process of waking. If it is dark in the morning, try a broad-spectrum light therapy lamp with a timer to help ease you into your morning.
  4. Stay on a consistent schedule. If you wake up at 6 a.m. during the workweek, that doesn’t mean you aren’t allowed to sleep in at all on the weekends. But try not to sleep in until noon on Saturdays. The closer you stick to your weekly routine, the better you’ll feel during the week when you return to it.
